In 2018, the US returned to the leading position in the Vietnam’s tra fish import market

[:en]In 2017, Vietnam tra fish export to the US market had got many pessimistic expectations when the anti-dumping tax was very high, besides, the catfish inspection program was transferred to the US Department of Agriculture, which caused many difficulties in implementation. However, in 2018, especially in the last two quarters, export of tra fish to this market has got many unexpected changes. In the first two quarters of 2018, tra fish export to the US market has not been really stable when in February and June 2018, the export value decreased from 4.3 to 5.5% over the same period last year.

At the same time, exporting tra fish to China still maintained positive growth rate of 38 – 132% compared to the same period in 2017. Many predictions were made that exporting tra fish to the US might increase at double-digit growth compared to the previous year and the US continued to stand in the position of the second largest export market of Vietnam tra fish. However, since the second quarter of 2018, tra fish export to the US reached the peak export of the year with the value of nearly US $ 66 million, with US $ 23.2 million higher than export value to China, up 256 % compared to August 2017. In the following months of the Q4, tra fish export to the US continued to grow at a high level from 92 to 152% compared to the same period last year.

With a steady increase and growth, at the end of October 2018, the US market has returned to the first position of Vietnam tra fish export. There were three major factors promoting tra fish exports to the US market in the past year, which was a preliminary conclusion of the 14th anti-dumping tax review (POR14) for the period from August 1, 2016 to July 31, 2017 for Vietnamese tra fish and basa products exported to the US market that was much lower than the final result of the POR13 review of US $ 3.87 / kg. Secondly, the fact that FSIS recognized Vietnam’s catfish control system equivalent to the United States and the China-US trade war was also the third opportunity for Vietnamese tra fish to gain market share from tilapia products in the US import market.
